About Pomeranians

The AKC describes Pomeranians as

"a compact, short-backed, active toy dog of Nordic descent. The double coat consists of a short dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured longer outer coat. The heavily plumed tail is one of the characteristics of the breed. It is set high and lies flat on the back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence in expression, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. He is sound in composition and action."

Size

Pomeranians should weigh 3-7 lbs and be 7-12 inches tall

The AKC describes their temperament:

"an extrovert, exhibiting great intelligence and a vivacious spirit, making him a great companion dog ."

Things my Poms have taught me:

  • you can skip a day brushing your hair and still look good
  • it is absolutely possible to keep running in a straight line while spinning in circles
  • you don't have to be the biggest or the toughest to be the boss
  • people will always love you if you smile
  • if you believe you can fly, you pretty much can
  • you never need a reason to dance
  • always protect the ones you love
  • never let a bad hair cut ruin your day

Health

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is one of the most prominent health concerns in the breed. Low blood sugar is prevalent not only in Pomeranians, but in many toy breeds. The condition is especially common in Pomeranian puppies, but also appears in fully mature individuals. Pomeranians, especially puppies do not have the ability to store much glycogen, so they begin using fat for metabolic processes. When they use up their fat, it triggers all the symptoms and problems associated with hypoglycemia.

Symptoms

  • lack of energy
  • severe exhaustion
  • feebleness
  • increased thirst
  • appetite loss
  • weight loss
  • bewilderment
  • falling over
  • respiratory problems
  • widening of the pupils
  • difficulties with vision
  • walking around unsteadily
  • quivering and nervousness
  • seizures may occur.

It is absolutely crucial for Pomeranians displaying any of these symptoms to get immediate veterinary assistance, as hypoglycemia can be life-threatening.

To help reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, ensure your pup always has access to food and clean water.

Other common health concerns for the Pomeranian breed are progressive retinal atrophy and entropion. Patellar luxation is an especially prominent risk for Pomeranians.
