This is actually a pretty heated topic for some breeders, but the common understanding on the internet is any dog with adult weight under 5 lbs is a teacup dog even though the standard for Pomeranians is a weight range of 3-7 lbs.
We recently found ourselves on the other end of things when we spent over 6 months looking for a male at or under 5 lbs. We thought we had finally found our boy and we drove over 3 hours to meet him.
Unfortunately, though we had been told that this puppy was expected to weigh between 4 and 6 lbs an adult, and that the sire was the larger of the parents at 6 pounds, this turned out to be VERY wrong! At 9 weeks old this boy was already 4 lbs! The breeder let us meet the sire, who was a beautiful boy, BUT he weighed at least 3 times what they told me he weighed.
I was devastated. We just drove over 3 hours to meet this boy I had already fallen in love with through pictures and spent the drive trying to come up with names for him (but I guess he dodged a bullet since one of the frontrunner's was "McFluffin). In the end, the safety of our breeding girls is everything to us and we just couldn't risk breeding a large male, so we left Pomless.
I dont ever want people who buy from me to have to go through that. Some people may think having a 15-20 lb pomeranian is fine (which it absolutely can be if that is what you are wanting), but when you have your heart set on a pom under 5 lbs, something 15 pounds or more is just not going to cut it. Imagine going to a breeder who told you parents were 50 lb dogs and then showing up to 150 lb dogs when you go to pick up! to me, that isn't right, and while I know that you can never guarantee adult weight, there are very reliable charts out there from many dedicated toy dog breeders.
With all that said, from now on, we plan to mark all pups charting under 5 lbs as Teacup both here on our website and on our ads at puppies.com. We also feel that transparency is vital, so we will offer, upon request, to any interested party, each puppy's own weight chart. we weigh our pups daily for the first 2 weeks and then weekly after that. Don't take our word for it, take their weight and look it up yourself in a toy dog weight chart you find elsewhere.
